Kancho Rony Visit

Kancho Rony has just completed a 10 day visit of Karate-do Australia. For the first weekend of training we studied fighting tactics and strategies of goju-ryu. We were joined in this endeavour by our goju-league colleagues. Evening trainings throughout the week were then spent on kata and bunkai practise and analysis, working through the Geikisai kata, Saifa, Nai'hanchi, Seiunchin and Shisochin katas. In addition to improving technique, we also worked on fighting spirit.

On our penultimate day of training, Kancho conducted a brown and black belt grading. Congratulations to Anthony Armany on earning his nidan, as well as to Danny Zielin, Cath Hamilton and Daniel Sandler on achieving their 9th level brown belt grades. The grading was followed by a bo class of kata, kihon and partner work, with perhaps the take home message being to apply the empty-handed goju-ryu fighting strategies studied throughout the week to the use of the bo.

For our final day with Kancho, we explored numerous exercises to develop facets of randori. This was followed by a Sayonara party at Shihans where karate-ka and partners shared food, drinks and stories of training and beyond.
